[...] The Big Issue opens with a statement and a question: “Human kind is getting fatter. Why?” This French Flash-based production travels two continents to investigate the global obesity epidemic. Using a “choose your own adventure” style navigation, the user becomes an active participant in the documentary, choosing which questions to ask interviewees and which location to visit next. The point is to make you feel like you are conducting the investigation yourself. While this technique is meant to immerse you in the story, the options are limited enough to make you feel like you’re being led but still plentiful enough that you too often miss something and have to backtrack to the start of the chapter (just as I remember the “choose your own adventure” books). This form of navigation can be frustrating to say the least. Sometimes you just want them to tell you what’s important without having to go find it yourself. [...]

[...] THE BIG ISSUE (Samuel Bollendorff, Olivia Colo, UK, 2009) We had this at doc/fest last and I was totally in love with it. Obesity is such a sensitive issue for those who suffer from it. But this approached the root of the issue, and navigates the culture around it in a subtle way that doesn’t shove it down your fucking throat. Story is not the concern, but experience and setting are. that is what maketh the man / woman / weight issue. Its even more exciting because of its online capability – making our access to it different, changing how we see a very serious health issue. Gimme more! [...]
